When introducing the unusually named Hoyas, it might have been a good idea to start out with a definition of the moniker. Instead, the book begins with a history of the school’s basketball team, which stretches back to 1907 and had its heyday in the 1980s. Other topics discussed include players, coaches, awards, rivalries, and where they play and what they wear. Stewart’s text never talks down to readers, and the lively writing style will keep kids turning the pages, as will the many exciting color photos. So what’s a Hoya? It’s not really a thing but a Greek word that’s part of the school chant (Hoya Saxa!).
