The Montgomery Family has a long heritage in Mississippi, beginning in 1856. John Harvey Montgomery, now 83 years old, is an African American who grew up in rural Mississippi during the 1920s and 1930s. This is his life story, filled with colorful remembrances of the history, culture, and folk life of the South. His 32 years of U.S. Military service to his country take him across Europe during World War II, through the Korean War, and the war in Vietnam. In Washington, D.C., he served as valet and aide to General Dwight D. Eisenhower, and after the Generals retirement, he served General Hoyt S. Vandenberg in the same capacity.
