Gr 7-10-Having the same format as the "American Wars" series (Lucent), this title makes effective use of quality black-and-white photographs, informative captions, helpful maps, guiding subtitles, and explanatory sidebars to relate the history-making events of June, 1944. The narrative is written in clear and concise prose that carries readers along from preparation through execution to hard-won success; background information as well as a summary of later events are also given. Although no new material is presented, many students may not be familiar with the disasters that befell the Allies at Slapton Sands and Dieppe prior to D-Day or with beachheads other than Omaha and Utah where the Americans landed. Pietrusza gives thumbnail sketches of many of the personalities involved and makes excellent use of cogent quotations.
