PreSchool-Grade 1-Using just one word per page and expressive watercolor illustrations, Janovitz creates an enjoyable picture book. The rhyming text tells how a shaggy-haired dog guards his water bowl from various intruders: a tenacious kitten, a spider, a bird, and a frog. The colors are muted; at times, the compositions seem flat and one-dimensional. Nonetheless, this whimsical tale is well served by illustrations that enhance and extend the simple rhymes. Beginning readers will delight in a book that isn't too hard, yet serves up a few humorous surprises.Marilyn Taniguchi, Santa Monica Public Library, CACopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.
