Goliath Must Fall: Winning the Battle Against Your Giants

Excellent book and interpretation of David slaying Goliath.

This is an excellent book on how the enemy uses giants to disturb our walks with Jesus which limit His glory in our lives. I read this along with watching the six Study Gateway videos where Giglio brings the essence of the 5 giants he covers and how we can combat them. The 5 giants are: fear, rejection, comfort, anger and addiction. What I really liked about this book is he uses the story of David and Goliath to firstly, illustrate each of the giants and, then secondly, demonstrate how we can tackle each of them. Giglio introduces three twists as he terms them in the biblical story: 1. In the story of David and Goliath, we are NOT David; Jesus is David, 2. Our giant is already dead. Jesus has already won the victory for us, and 3. David's motivation for taking on Goliath was the fame of God. We too are invited to be similarly motivated by God's honour and glory. One perspective I really appreciated in his interpretation of the Goliath story is that David approached the giant in his vulnerable self. David was only a scrawny teenager. He rejected Saul's armour because it was too unwieldy for him. All he had was a slingshot and some stones. Goliath, the nine foot giant resplendent in head to toe armour, was a terrifying foe for this kid to confront. And Goliath certainly made sure David knew that when he approached him. But David knew he wasn't able in his own self but was enabled by the power of God. This is a wonderful demonstration how we can defeat our giants. Don't cover ourselves with armour but come forward in all our vulnerability, looking to Jesus to defeat the enemy in us, the enemy He has already defeated. And very simply that's the answer when confronted by our giant: proclaim the name of Jesus and keep proclaiming His name. They say the way you break a bad habit is to replace it with a good one.
