Contemporary story of Charity Hope. After suffering an amputation injury in Afghanistan, Charity Hope receives disability status from the U.S. Army and returns home to St. Louis. She arrives after nine months of rehab and learning to use the prosthesis. She is eager to return to her role as wife and mother. The injury affected her husband, who viewed her as a broken and less than a complete woman and his first action within the first ten minutes of reuniting is to ask for a divorce.Charity's father is so angry that he has a physical altercation with her husband and takes Charity and her son home with him to help her get established.Charity, although she is a computer genius has trouble finding a career. Her disability pay, help from her father and tapping her savings is the way she is making a home for her precocious son. The savings are about to run out and she is worried.Her ex-husband remains an antagonist. Although he and his son have nothing in common and the boy detests his father for the derogatory comments about his mother, he has threatened to sue for custody just to punish Charity for being wounded. Her ex-husband thinks her injury ruined his idyllic life. He will create a real problem.This is the story of the struggle to establish a life for herself and her son.
