Robert Browning (1812-1889) was an English poet and playwright whose mastery of dramatic verse, especially dramatic monologues, made him one of the foremost Victorian poets. Helen A. Clarke also contributed introductions and notes. Prince Hohenstiel-Schwangau, Saviour of Society, is a long poem about French Emperor Napoleon III. Pacchiarotto, and How He Worked in Distemper is a short collection of poems; the title poem, ostensibly discussing the life and works of 15th Century Italian painter Giacomo Pacchiarotti, is actually a thinly veiled attack on Browning's own critics.
