About the Author Charles Petterson served nine years in the U.S. Navy. Following 22 months of training he reported to USS Nathanael Greene Blue Crew. After completing three patrols and becoming qualified in submarines (SS) he transferred to USS Lapon Pre-Commissioning Unit. During four years Lapon received two Meritorious Unit Citations and a Presidential Unit Citation. The author was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and Navy Expeditionary Medal. He transferred from Lapon to USS Bluefish for the remainder of his enlistment. The author is president of USS Lapon Association and active in United States Submarine Veterans Marlin Base. He also is active with Iowa Military Veterans Band. The author lives with his wife, Lynn, in Western Iowa.
