Continuing the story begun in Changeling (Simon Pulse, 2012/Voya August 2012), Luca and his companions, once again joined by Isolde and Ishraq, find themselves traveling together, this time bound to Zagreb—he to seek out more signs of the End of Days, and the girls to find Isolde's godfather in the hope he can help her reclaim the inheritance stolen by her brother. During a stop in Piccolo they find themselves witness to the pilgrimage of the Children's Crusade, led by a charismatic Swiss goatherd. Johann's prophecies convince Luca and his party to abandon their previous orders and follow Johann and his band to Jerusalem. While making preparations, the area is devastated by an earthquake and then a tidal wave, which washes Johann and many of his followers out to sea.
