When Lachlan Gilmore stops to help Lady Annabel Erskine, whose cart has become stuck in the marsh, he has no idea his charitable act will entangle his family in a dangerous battle over the fate of Mary Stuart. Annabel is in Lochleven to help prepare a new set of garments for Mary, who has been imprisoned on Castle Island. When Annabel discovers Lachlan's sister Christina is a gifted seamstress, she offers her a job, which Christina soon accepts. Because the lives and livelihood of her family are strongly tied to Mary's political opponents, Christina vows to stay clear of any scheme to restore Mary to power; but the more time Christina spends with Annabel and her entourage, the more difficult it becomes to keep that promise.
