Words for sounds are splashed across the pages of Noises, which begins with a child's awakening to a ringing alarm clock and chirping birds. The text notes the many noises that other children hear on city streets, in backyards, at the doctor's office, and at bedtime. Counting from one to five is emphasized in Numbers. Readers are asked to consider the characteristics of similar objects in Shapes. The language in all three titles is engaging, particularly in Numbers, which contains a pleasing rhyme scheme: "On the pavement, in the sun,/Sue is skipping, having fun.
