This book from the Extreme Careers series looks at the U.S. Marine Corps as a vocational choice, focusing on combat arms units. Short chapters offer information about infantry units, armor units, and artillery units, and the last chapter details eligibility requirements and the process for becoming a Marine. Although Payment notes that women cannot currently serve in combat arms units, she makes clear that they "can be engineers, aircraft mechanics, drivers, and combat pilots." One of the many good color photos shows young women training at Parris Island. In addition to the well-focused text, informative sidebars introduce topics such as the Corps' relationship with the Navy. The evenhanded book is candid about the dangers of combat, but some might feel that the portrayal of recruiters as helpful sources of information is questionable.
