Jewel in the Stone is a story about Andrew Prentiss, an African American, third-generation pastor of Third Street Baptist Church in Chicago. He is approaching mid life and becoming increasingly unhappy with his pastoral role. He and his wife, Lisa, are also having marital problems. Marcus, another minister on Andrew's staff and Andrew's long-time nemesis, secretly plans to publicly humiliate Andrew and take over the church. Lisa, Andrew's wife, enters into a sexual liaison and unknowingly conspires with Marcus to implement his plan. Upon finding out that Lisa and Marcus are lovers, Andrew resigns as pastor of the church and moves to Atlanta, Georgia where he enters the seminary. While studying for his doctorate in theology, he meets Aset. Andrew believes that Aset is also a student, but as she takes him on a magical and mystical journey into re-discovering his true identity and life purpose, he discovers that she is the teacher.
