Stephen J. Wyatt—a.k.a. Sneeze because of his allergies—is a boy genius cum inventor and has just arrived home from a driving trip to California with his parents. They went on the trip so Steve could present his "Nice Alarm," which awakens its user with two gentle taps on the shoulder instead of loud noises, to a manufacturer. Unfortunately, said manufacturer does not appear to be interested. Now he has to tell his friends he failed to sell his invention. Plus, he has to deal with bullies at the high school where he takes some classes even though he is still in middle school; and he realizes his second best friend, Hayley, makes his fingers tingle and his heart race.
