A Highway Away: Nowata is book 1.5 in the A Highway Away series. This time, readers follow along with Elizabeth and Laura, Nicko's younger sister and mother, as they survive through the beginning of The Release. Elizabeth is stuck in the operating room all day, hard at work for her medical residency. However, once she leaves the OR, Elizabeth realizes something horrible has happened in the outside world. Laura is at a business conference hundreds of miles from home when she gets a call from her daughter, Elizabeth, explaining of the devastating news. The country is under attack, and though Laura thinks she is safe in Kansas, not everything is as it seems.. Both women must make it home to Nowata safely. Both must wait for their last family member to return while protecting their hometown from the creatures of the night.
