A western and Indian artist. The legacy of Otho Stubbs is his art--over 1,000 paintings. The book contains a small collection of his art,73 color paintings, 18 pen and ink drawings, 19 photogrpahs of artifacts and memorabilia, 2 woodcarvings, and 1 taxidermy. Buffalos, cows, and horses are what he liked best to draw, but an elk, eagle, and aoudad sheep also are included. Action scenes provide glimpses into his cowboy and ranching experiences. Another chapter relates Indian experiences--the "Hopi Indian Snake Dance", "Navajo Fire Dance", "Comanche Buffalo Ritual", and "Medicine Man". Excerpts from the battlefield during World War II enacompass 4 drawings made during the heat of action. Another chapter shows archeological findings, tying artifacts he has found to the history of the area. Historical paintings included are "Camp Resolution 1841", "Texas Santa Fe Expedition", "Coronado in Tule Canyon", "Mackenzie Captures Tafoya", "Valley of the Tears", and Mackenzie and Quanah Parker in "Battle of Blanco Canyon". The last chapter contains a colleciton of snow scenes and landscapes from the Texas Panhandle and New Mexico. Wood sculpture and taxidermy complete the book. This is a treasury for art lovers. Every painting tells a story. The stories are true life experiences, as he painted what he knew. Put together, it gives glimpses into his life, and a history of the area where he lived.
