Brigham Young University came into being, when, in 1876, Brigham Young, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gave Karl Maeser the following commission: "You are to go to Provo, Brother Maeser. I want you to organize and conduct an academy to be established in the name of the Church - a Church School." And he added: "I want you to remember that you ought not to teach even the alphabet or the multiplication tables without the Spirit of God." Thus, the motto of this university, "The Glory of God Is Intelligence."
