As the length of this bibliography indicates, there is a large record of publications on the farm outbuilding, here defined as the barn, stable, hop barn, tobacco barn, corncrib, or granary. The range of articles and books covers the entire spectrum from intensive studies of single buildings through nostalgia pieces to broad-gauge surveys of whole regions or building types. Very few bibliographies on all or some types of farm buildings exist and few of these are readily available to the student, researcher, or novice "barn hunter." The history of farm outbuildings and their preservation are much too important to leave to architects alone. It is hoped that this bibliography will prove useful to architects, architectural historians, geographers, folklorists, material culturalists, vernacularists, agriculturalists, historians, and, above all, the average person interested in the farm outbuildings in his local area.
