Gr 6 Up--This compact book provides reluctant readers with an accessible and more than adequate introduction to U.S. participation in World War I. Kent begins with a harrowing, somewhat detailed account of the sinking of the British steamer Lusitania. He then provides concise background information and continues from the outbreak of war in August, 1914, on through America's entry to the final shots in November, 1918. Although the narrative is brief, it remains crisp and is not oversimplified. The accompanying maps and archival black-and-white photographs are unremarkable, but these deficiencies are offset by the inclusion of ample source and chapter notes, as well as a chronology and helpful index.David A.
