The purpose of this book is to discuss both the social function of technology, and the particular socially-accepted interpretations of 'legitimations' which are placed on this function. I have attempted to show how the contemporary problems associated with technology stem as much from the nature of technology as from the uses to which it is put, but that the former is largely determined by social and political factors, of which technology can never therefore be considered independent. I hope to indicate how an alternative technology might be developed which would avoid the problems associated with contemporary technology that we now experience.
