I've read nearly all the existing books or memoirs by U Boot Commanders of WW2 as well as those of their US counterparts and the very few written by Japanese I boat commanders ..I' m a former Submariner and Submarine Architect and Engineer from the French Navy and I have navigated on and overhauled the type 7 ,type 9 ,type 21 U boots at the LORIENT/KEROMAN (ex ) German bunker base .We got these subamrines after the end of the war as "Dommages de guerre ".so I know exactly how they should be operated (I had narrow death misses with them !). I also met those ex U boot Commanders who were not sunk with their ship .This book is the best of all I read :it gives an exact account of how the underwater war evolfed from 1939 to May 1943 when the Germans had the upper hand ,then from May 1943to the end when they were defeated and why and how it happened ; It's no frills extensive description of U boot Submarine warfare.
