The first three volumes of the thoroughly revised 13th edition of this standard reference appeared in 1987. Vol. 4 of six volumes covers philosophy and religion, treated in a single volume for the first time. The reference lists books for the general reader available in English, with publisher, price, and a brief description of each. Important out-of-print books are also included. The coverage of philosophy is fairly comprehensive. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are given equal treatment, with a separate section on the Bible; the section on world religions includes cults, popular movements, and the more popular religious thinkers.
