On August 7-8 1989 Loyola University of Chicago presented a symposium commemorating the centenary of Gerald Manley Hopkins' death and celebrating his exquisite poetry. Six of the eight essays in this volume were presented at this symposium. A seventh, by Peter Milward, S.J., would have been given at the conference had distance not been prohibitive. An eighth essay, by the editor, captures the broader issues involved in presenting such a symposium, and the lively exchange that took place at the round table discussion survives in the form of an appendix.
