This book is the first part of the second volume of a commentary on the Gospel of Luke under the general title The Third Gospel for the Third World, which will eventually consist of five volumes. The first volume covers the Lucan Preface (Luke 1:1-4) and Infancy Narrative (Luke 1:5-2:52) . The second volume covers The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee (Luke 3:1-9:50) , of which this first part covers (Luke 3:1-6:49) . Like the first volume, the present book pays special attention, though not exclusive, to the particular interests of Third World readers. It deals with questions raised by the sociological approach to the Gospels, as well as anthropological and cultural features, like matters of family, clan and tribe, matters of honor and shame, and the conditions of rural and urban life. It also takes into account some finding of recent literary criticism. The commentary makes available to a wider reading public pastoral implications in a Third World setting.
