T. B. Harbottle's "Dictionary of Battles" has long been a standard reference work. Since its first publication in 1904, the dictionary has provided student and scholar alike with concise and accurate information on literally thousands of engagements. This new edition has been revised and brought up to date by George Bruce, whose efforts have expanded the dictionary without detracting from Harbottle's original far-ranging scholarship. Bruce notes in his Preface: "Alterations and changes in the text I confined to matters of fact. I standardized the sequence of fact in each battle reference, but I did not change either Mr. Harbottle's spelling of place names, or his style. Thus, in battles before the twentieth century, occasionally the enemy was 'slain,' 'utterly routed,' 'signally defeated,' or 'driven from the field in confusion.
