Grade 9 Up-Taylor discusses the elements of Confucian tradition in culture and in the arts as well as its specification of differing roles for men, women, and children in society. He devotes one chapter to significant developments through the centuries and another to the place of the tradition's ancient practices and ideas in the world today. Full-page sidebars feature selections from Confucian writings and teachings, which serve to both break up and add flavor to the long sections of text. A halftone map of China with some of its neighboring countries appears as a frontispiece. Illustrative material includes a map showing the extent of early Confucianism, a diagram of a typical temple, and a section of glossy color photographs of art and sculpture. A cleanly designed chronology and a simple time line help clarify the history of this tradition. The bibliography of well-chosen items is followed by a further reading section featuring short lists of primary and secondary sources and an annotated list of relevant Web sites.-Ann G.
