With approximately 10,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the United States, multiple sclerosis is the most common neurological disorder that strikes young adults. The risk is double for Caucasian women; however, men, children, and other racial groups also contract multiple sclerosis. It is a difficult, unpredictable autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. Symptoms may include pain, sudden weakness, or difficulties with vision, speech, or mobility. Many people with multiple sclerosis experience problems such as fatigue, a limp, or difficulties with bladder control, and about 15% need to use a wheelchair full-time. Currently, there is no cure, but several therapies can relieve the symptoms and, in some cases, delay disease progression.
