Reviewed with John Crossingham's Snowboarding in Action.Gr. 4-7. Well-illustrated and surprisingly thorough considering their brevity, these titles in the Sports in Action series offer a good introduction to their sports. Cycling presents different types of cycles, offers advice on sizing a bike to its rider, and then gives tips on bike maintenance and on techniques for mounting hills, long day trips, racing, and freestyle. Snowboarding discusses ski-hill terminology and basics, such as getting on and off the lift, and then instructs how to attach bindings and how to master basic movements, such as stopping and turning while maintaining balance. Subsequent spreads address different moves for various snow conditions. Although not all the young athletes are pictured with helmets, both books encourage readers to observe safety practices, and a spread on suggested warm-up stretches reinforces the texts' emphasis on injury prevention.
