A Translation of Andre-Michel Guerry's Essay on the Moral Statistics of France: A Sociological Report to the French Academy of Science (Studies in French Civilization, V. 26)

Whitt (sociology, U. of Nebraska-Lincoln) and Reinking (French, Seattle U.) each translated Essay sur la statistique morale de la France separately, then heard about each other and decided to combine their expertise and merge their efforts. Many, but not all, historians of science consider the work one of the foundations of moral statistics, and Guerry to be a cofounder of the empirical social sciences. The study analyzes criminal statistics and their geographical distribution, education, illegitimate children, donations and bequests, and suicides. The text is double spaced. Annotation c.
