Orientations: The Found Poetry Of Scholarly Discourse On Asia

The scholar seeks to advance the frontiers of knowledge, and scholarly research hinges upon serious intellectual engagement. Yet the language of scholarly discourse has its own distinctive features--a poetic, if you will, marked by modes of diction, figuration, and argumentation. I would go one step further and call attention to the latent poetic quality of this discourse.
