Grade 3-5-A straightforward, somewhat didactic look at the history behind this red-letter day. The majority of the book focuses on how it was started, what was accomplished between the first celebration in 1970 and next in 1990, and how it became an annual, worldwide observance. Information on what students can do to promote and participate in Earth Day is given an entire chapter, as is advice on what readers can do to help clean up the environment. Sidebars at the beginning of each chapter offer slight additional information or statements, such as "Our planet is sick because we have not taken good care of it." Crisp, full-color photographs are sprinkled generously throughout the text. An Earth Day craft project is appended with the back matter.
