Grade 3-5–These titles give historical background and meaning to several symbols that are covered in the social-studies curriculum. The language is easy to grasp, and the books contain just the right balance of objective, unbiased facts and good-quality current and archival photographs and illustrations. Each title has three succinct chapters; the page numbers of important graphics are set in bold type in the helpful index. A Find Out More section includes books and Web sites. The sites in Bald Eagle include educational games, activities, and additional information and photographs, and those in Capitol offer varying degrees of more in-depth historical material and virtual tours of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Ellis Island and Uncle Sam sites are either weak in content, too commercial, or not active at the time of review.
