"What kind of a wife do you think Joan would make?" This was the start of the marriage between Joan, a teacher from Liverpool, and Alex Park, eleven years her senior and from Glagow. Married in 1953, Joan moved to Glasgow and into a very different world from the one she had known, for Alex expected a wife who stayed at home, brought up the children and kept a good house. She, an experienced teacher, wished to continue her career. From this mis-match arose a long list of disasters and misunderstandings, but also a loving and close family who rose above all through the exercise of tolerance and humour. Joan Park's account of her marriage, as seem through her husband's eyes, is humorous and encouraging, a wonderful glimpse into the hardships of the immediate post-War years through the changes of the 1960s and 1970s to the present.
