The novel is characterized as an adventure/mystery which takes place in Haiti in the days before Baby Doc is deposed. A country doctor--Dr. Bone-- from a small Texas town leads a team of doctors and nurses to Cap Haitian to do medical clinics in the countryside but encounters Voodoo, a zombie and the secret white powder which creates them, as well as difficulty with the sinister Minister of Health for Haiti and an evil voodoo witch doctor--a Houngan. The novel alternates between the socioeconomic conditions of Haiti and a small central Texas town with some colorful comedic characters. Zulla Maye, Dr. Bone's African -American nurse, brings back Voodoo to their small Texas town with terrifying results.
