From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up–Well-written articles by adoption professionals offer cogent arguments on many aspects of this controversial issue. This second edition features more recent articles than the 2002 volume on the same general subtopics: whether adoption should be encouraged; conflicting views on transracial, international, and gay parent adoptions; whose rights are most in need of protection--adoptive or birth parents or those of adoptees; as well as what government policies should be implemented. The earlier title included articles on the potential and abuses associated with Internet adoptions while this one presents the pros and cons of embryo adoptions. A general overview of the history of adoption is provided. Each subsection is prefaced with an introductory essay and ends with an updated periodical bibliography. Though this edition has completely new material, it does not differ significantly enough to be a first purchase in collections that own the previous one. However, it is recommended for collections where the demand for material on the topic is high.
