This reissued volume has been extensively rewritten due to much new information being available on this part of Eastern Britain under Roman administration. Despite the new evidence, even in 1991 the principal themes of research from the early 1970s were still very much present in archaeology at the time of rewriting. Unfortunately the problem of non-publication of archaeological digs was also still present as a problem. This book therefore includes the most important advances in the archaeology of rural settlement, at least in terms of the accessible results
