In the Comet Theatre, London, seven people have good reason for wanting beautiful Maxine Culver out of the way: Grace Challoner, leading lady, and her politician husband, Philip Dunster; Stephen Hammond, her leading man; Ethel Fothergill, the character actress; and old Tom Langley, stage director. Each one has reason to fear Maxine's blackmail, but perhaps none so much as Doctor David Radcliffe, whose first play is being produced at the Comet, and who has fallen in love with fledgling actress Susan Howard...
