From School Library Journal Grade 3-6-This fourth book in the series focuses on Ollie, the pitcher for the Scrappers, who lacks confidence and finds it hard to concentrate without talking to himself. Because he announces what pitch he is planning on throwing, the batter is often ready for it. His eccentric style of play invites ridicule from Gloria, the team's highly opinionated shortstop. She not only makes fun of him, but also anyone else who makes an error during a game. In the end, the team comes together. Gloria works out her differences with her teammates, and Ollie learns how to concentrate without speaking out loud. Hughes's characters are likable, ordinary kids. This well-written book stresses individualism and teamwork. A good addition to beef up a sports-fiction collection.
