From Publishers Weekly The feel-full diet presents a practical and nutritional way to achieve permanent weight loss. Weight maintenance is a physiological problem, not psychological, maintains gastroenterologist Peikin, director of the Jefferson Nutrition Program at Philadelphia's Jefferson Medical College, where this diet was developed. The goal is to increase the body's production of cholecystokinin or CCK, a hormone affecting appetite control. By eating a "satietizer" composed mainly of fat and protein, the dieter's body begins to produce CCK; and when embarking on the small main course 2030 minutes later, the dieter already is starting to experience the sensation of "fullness." The remaining part of the diet is based on calorie restrictions (1200 daily for women and 1300 for men) and exercise options. The recipes by Gloria Kaufer Greene (The Jewish Holiday Cookbook are varied and generally easy to prepare. Entrees, such as chicken cacciatore, linguine with white scallop sauce and broccoli frittata, are all under 300 calories per serving. First serial to Woman's Day. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal There has been much research lately on the mechanisms that control feelings of hunger or fullness. One is the hormone cholecystokinin (CCK), which tells the brain that a person is full. Dr. Peikin, director of the Nutrition Program at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, proposes that certain foods trigger the release of CCK into the bloodstream, thus making you feel full sooner and eat less at a meal. These foods are called "satietizers" (i.e., opposite of appetizers). The average weight loss on this diet, which has been tested in the hospital setting, is two pounds per week. Exercise tips, sample menus, and recipes are included. An interesting and timely approach to weight control. Recommended for public libraries. Anne Washburn, Julius C.
