From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1 - A small bird spends his days hard at work, pecking little dimples into sewing thimbles. One day he finds a pebble that he hopes is magic; he tosses it into the air, puts it in his mouth, pats it, and dances around it. When he decides it is just a normal pebble, he tosses it into the closet with his other "unmagic" things. The next day, Gordimer decides to build himself a sculptural reminder out of all the unmagic things that he had collected over the years. A few days later, his friend Olivia Katz, a cat, admires his handiwork. The next day at work, Gordimer finds that "the colors of Monday morning were as different and familiar as usual." The implied message - that one must create one's own magic in life - is rather vague for a young child's sensibilities. Weinstock's artwork, created by Adobe Illustrator in a blue and gray palette, is indistinct and lackluster. Gordimer, as petite as a sparrow, looks like a pebble himself with mere dots for facial features. Olivia Katz is larger and sports enormous spectacles that hide her facial features. There is not much action, substance, or child appeal here.
