Surprise!

When "eight furry stripes come peeking through," Rose discovers that the box contains a kitten. Simple rhymes and few words evoke all five family members?Rose's proud parents, an inquisitive baby, a pleased older sister, and the happy protagonist. Gouache double-page spreads show the figures enjoying themselves and celebrating Rose's surprise, and the contrast of their bright clothing against dark backgrounds exudes a sense of familial closeness. This charming story captures all of the joy and anticipation of giving and receiving a gift.
