From School Library Journal Grade 2-5. In this spirited overview, seven holidays are described and photographed: the Day of the Dead, as celebrated in Guatemala; Guatemala's Dance of the Conquistadors; Carnival, in both Belize and Panama; Holy Week in El Salvador; Honduras's San Jose Fair; the Virgin of Masaya Celebration in Nicaragua; and Columbus Day, as observed in Costa Rica. With only one page of text per festival, the narrative is too cursory to be of much help to report writers. Although an introduction explains the significance of Catholicism and the prevalence of racial mixing in Central America, the book ends with Carnival?there's no conclusion whatsoever. The half- and whole-page, full-color photographs depict the overwhelming vivacity of each festival. Crisp and clean, these pictures burst with the bright colors of Central American flowers, feathers, and costumes, and will leave readers wishing they could witness the celebrations in person.?Denise E.
