Breathtaking Noses

(Morrow, 1991), Machotka uses a full-color photograph of a body part as a focus to help readers think about an animal's way of life--after piquing their interest by having them guess the creature involved. After featuring the ``king of noses'' on the intriguing cover photo, and its elephant-owner on the title page, she proceeds to show noses for a fish, snake, swan, pig, dog, camel, and walrus. Closeups, sometimes enlarged to a fuzzy obscurity that adds to the puzzle, are followed by a picture of the whole animal and informative text.
