From School Library Journal Grade 3-6-- As with the other titles in this popular series, Hippo explores in words and spectacular photographs the life of a hippopotamus in captivity and presents facts about the animal in the wild. The hippos' habitat, group characteristics, and physical qualities are clearly explained as well as their unique adaptation to life in and near the water. A few facts may be up for debate, e.g. Arnold ranks the hippo as the second largest land animal while other sources list it third behind the rhino and the elephant. Never mind. Small quibbles won't detract from this book's usefulness and attractiveness. Hewett's charming full-color photographs succeed in making this admittedly odd-looking animal as engaging as the other more cuddly creatures in the series. A well-rounded look at the hippopotamus for unsophisticated readers, and one that most libraries will want to consider. --Amy Adler, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, OHCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.
