From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1-- As Mary's roomy elevator takes her from 1 to 12, it stops on each floor to collect a costumed passenger: a chef in white, a yellow banana, an orange clown, etc. Their strict eyes-front elevator reserve lasts until they all emerge on 12 with a shout of "Surprise!" to celebrate Mary's mother's birthday. While Sis' drawings are cheerful, the ordinal numbers in the text are abbreviated, and the cardinal numbers on the "clock" above the elevator are barely legible. The colored windows of each floor, shown on the first page, don't always correspond to the color worn by that floor's occupant. As far as one can tell, the male guests are a king, an astronaut, a chef and a surgeon; the females are a witch, Little Red Riding Hood, a honeybear, and a girl in a wet suit. Better to wait for the next car. --Patricia Dooley, University of Washington, SeattleCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.
