From Publishers Weekly This beautiful little book is the perfect gift for a new baby and his or her family. Accomplished author/artist Aliki tenderly depicts a newborn and its family's first experiences. "Welcome to our world, little baby," the text begins. "We've been waiting for you." The story evokes all the warm feelings new parents and their loved ones have toward babies. Aliki's illustrations show everyday events that will interest older children, while toddlers will be drawn to the prominently displayed faces of the baby and its mother. All ages. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 2 Here's a different sort of ``new baby'' book, a warm, tender greeting for a little one. Simple prose combined with charming pictures in the soft, bright colors of spring express the wonder and promise of a new life. Sweet without being saccharine, the text describes the small world of an infant and the way in which that sphere will expand as the baby discovers ``things you didn't know when you were born.'' Impressionistic illustrations in crayon and ink follow the text; mother and child are shown at home and visiting the park, experiencing the sights and sounds around them. This is not a book about sibling relationships, as the focus is almost entirely on baby and mother, with the father appearing on the last page as part of the family. For this reason, the book would be a lovely gift for a new mother, but may not have much appeal to young children. Welcome, New Baby is just thata welcome that expresses the miracle of birth and growth.
