Born in Illinois in 1899, he began his career as a reporter before serving as an ambulance driver in the First World War. Known first for short stories, his literary reputation was further enhanced by his novels, including THE SUN ALSO RISES (1926) , A FAREWELL TO ARMS (1929) , FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS (1940) , and THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA (1952) . He died in 1961.
