Early readers will find their favorite authors and illustrators in one great big book-including works by Dr. Seuss, P.D. Eastman, Richard Scarry, Stan & Jan Berenstain, Torrie dePaola, and Marc Brown. Read more Continue reading Read less FROM SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL
Kindergarten-Grade 3-This somewhat disappointing collection includes 16 stories, all previously published. Richard Scarry, Jane O'Connor, Laurent De Brunhoff, Tomie dePaola, Harriet Ziefert, Stan and Jan Berenstain, and Marc Brown are among the authors and illustrators included. However, the quality of the selections is uneven. Excerpted chapters from perennial favorites like Dr. Seuss's Fox in Socks (1965) and P.D. Eastman's Go, Dog, Go! (1966) appear along with Jon Buller and Susan Schade's mundane 20,000 Baseball Cards under the Sea (1991) and Katherine Ross's ho-hum adaptation of The Ugly Duckling (1991, all Random) . Additionally, the organization is haphazard with some of the easiest stories lost in the middle where intimidated beginning readers will never venture. Nonetheless, there are those youngsters who will be thrilled to find "a fat" book that they can read and carry around like a trophy. Too bad there's so much mediocre filler.

Gr. K-2. The very youngest readers will enjoy this compilation of easy-to-read stories. The publisher has mined its backlist and come up with some gems from Dr. Seuss, the Berenstains, P. D. Eastman, and others. The 16 selections include the original artwork, brightened it seems, giving the story a spiffy look. The only problem may be the thick, oversize format--hard for little hands to hold and difficult for librarians to put away on the often compact easy-to-read shelves. Ilene Cooper FROM THE INSIDE FLAP
