Wondering what to wear on the Riviera or how to say in French, "My clutch is shot"? This handsome and reasonably priced guide is not for you. Try it instead for background notes on Beaujolais, Impressionism, and cuisine minceur. Ideally travelers will read this before leaving home. The book is divided into two sections: an introduction to French life, featuring short essays on art, wine, history, and other essentials, all written by well-known authorities, and a gazetteer of places in 21 regions. The maps are inferior to the many fine illustrations. An excellent buy. Ian Wallace, Agriculture Canada Lib., Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec
