Helped me to be knowledgeable and assertive

I was diagnosed with food allergies (tree nuts) as an adult, after being able to eat them all of my life. My allergist tested me for tree nut allergies after I told her I was having itchy mouth when eating almonds, and when the results came back positive, my allergist told me to avoid tree nuts and carry and epi-pen, since I have a history of anaphylaxis with my non-food allergies. As a 26 year old with a new and dangerous food allergy, I needed some more guidance. Sloane Miller's book was the guidance I needed. The book made me realize that it was ok to ask my allergist a million questions. It also gave me the confidence that I needed to eat out in restaurants, because I was armed with questions to ask the manager and kitchen staff before I even stepped foot in the restaurant, as well as the right questions to ask my waiter once in the restaurant. I realized it was ok to ask questions in places I thought questions might have been annoying, such as talking to the catering manager at a wedding or special event. The book also helped me discuss my food allergies with dates, and have actually found the men I have dated to be super understanding about it, even checking to make sure they food that they order doesn't have nuts in case I wanted to try their food. It also gave me tools for family members who think the allergy is all in my head and continue to offer me food with nuts in it. This book is not for people looking for a pure scientific/medical discussion of allergies. If you are looking for a book that helps you cope with allergies in real life situations, "Allergic Girl" is the book for you. It definitely helped me build confidence in being an advocate for my safety when it comes to my allergies. Read more
